Trump says he 'absolutely' would support Colin Kaepernick getting second shot in NFL despite kneeling controversy

President Trump lent some support Wednesday to former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick, saying he "would love to see him get another shot" if he still has the skills to play in the league.

During an interview with Sinclair correspondent Scott Thuman, Trump was asked about Kaepernick, the then-San Francisco 49er who sparked a national debate in 2016 when he protested police brutality by kneeling during the national anthem, and whether or not the president believes Kaepernick "should get another shot in the NFL."

"If he deserves it, he should. If he has the playing ability," Trump said. "He started off great and then he didn't end up very great in terms of as a player. He was terrific in his rookie year, I think he was very good in his second year, and then something happened. So his playing wasn't up to snuff."

The president continued: "The answer is absolutely I would. As far as kneeling -- I would love to see him get another shot, but obviously he has to play well. If he can't play well, I think it would be very unfair."

President Trump expressed a similar sentiment back in August 2019, telling White House reporters at the time: "I'd love to see Kaepernick come in if he's good enough, But I don't want to see him come in because somebody thinks it's a good PR move.”

Trump has previously been a longtime critic of Kaepernick and other players who knelt during the anthem.

Kaepernick has not played in the NFL since the 2016 season with the San Francisco 49ers. He led the team to the Super Bowl against the Baltimore Ravens during the 2012 season, but the 49ers lost.

In his time away from the NFL, Kaepernick has been involved in a number of social activism organizations and founded the “Know Your Rights Camp,” which teaches young children about self-empowerment, American history and legal rights. He also picked up a multimillion-dollar deal with Nike.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell recently said that he'd "encourage" teams to sign Kaepernick ahead of the upcoming season.

From 2017 - 2019, no team would touch Colin Kaepernick because his talent did not overcome the unwanted controversy.

In 2020, a team will get such fawning praise for giving Kaepernick a chance that such media positivity will overcome the fact that he sucks as a QB and hasn't played in 4 years.

So I fully expect that a team will sign him. And I fully expect that said team will not win the Super Bowl. My only hesitation is this: Kaepernick, deep down inside, knows he is not an NFL starter. Is he willing to potentially expose himself as inadequate and/or accept backup QB money?

this is why he didn’t play it wasn’t because of talent. He’s been way more talented than at least 60% of the qbs in the league (not starters just total qbs) but he’s not good enough to put up with the circus that would have come with it. If it was only about talent he would have never been out of the league while guys like Blaine gabbert, mark Sanchez, geno Smith, every Jets/dolphins/bears/broncos/raiders qbs were getting paid

He is very innacurate throwing the ball... for awhile his surprising speed made his passing game successful, but teams learned to keep him in the pocket and he is a poor pocket passer.
He will have a great game, accuracy wise, but then have 5 in a row where his unorthodox delivery results in miss after miss.
No way with all this time off he should even be a #3 on an NFL team.
No team wants him as a starter, as a #3 he would just be a huge enormous ugly distraction, so why mess with him at all?

POTUS is wrong here.

Not really. He is just saying it, Trump also said he is very opposed to NFL players kneeling in disprespect.

He know Kaepernick is not nearly good enough + 3.5 year lay off and that any team that takes him is doing it for BLM and the Africans on the team and in the league, an "in your face" move.

What's he supposed to say?

If somebody wants to hire him, they can hire him. I personally don't think there's much interest but we shall see.

If he kneels during the anthem, Trump will criticize him, everyone else who kneels and everyone that enables kneeling

More importantly, the silent majority will rise again as we did last time around. We're tired of all this bullshit
